Belleville Landfill Project

Borrego EPC designed and built this 13.2 MW solar facility located on a closed landfill in Belleville, Illinois. The project, owned by AES, includes over 32,000 solar modules and is among the largest solar arrays ever built on a closed landfill in the U.S.

The system will provide Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to ComEd, Ameren, and MidAmerican Energy, which together serve over 20 million customers in Illinois. The project is expected to offset 12,855 metric tons of carbon annually, the equivalent of powering 2,167 homes with electricity for one year.

This landfill-sited PV system is one of two projects selected by the Illinois Power Authority (IPA) as part of its 2019 Brownfield Solar Procurement. In addition to generating clean energy for state utility use, the project has other positive impacts for the community and the state of Illinois. It will generate an estimated $1.2 million dollars in local property taxes over its lifetime, it is ideal to site a solar project on a closed landfill, it employed regional skilled workers including union labor during construction, and it offsets the CO2 equivalent of 1.4 million gallons of gasoline each year.
